A real-life Floss, suffering
Look at this picture, posted on Facebook. Do you imagine this poor pup is happy? Can you believe that some people say dogs don’t have feelings? Don’t feel fear and loneliness?
This is what Thea comes to understand in my book. Being scared of dogs, she never thought of a dog being scared. Only when she saw Floss looking like this, starving and frightened, did she realise dogs needed care and love, too

Britain’s cruel dog breeders
This is not a happy story, and I don’t like posting it, but it’s important to see that cruel, greedy and callous people exist everywhere, even in a country famous for its animal lovers.
Not understanding what dogs and other animals need from their owners – care, attention, food, protection, shelter and so on – is one thing. The people in this article are criminals, cruel, callous and greedy – they breed dogs in appalling conditions and defraud people who want a cute puppy, selling them puppies who are sick, sometimes dying.
It’s very hard to read if you love dogs. It may shock you if you haven’t thought about dogs and other animals as living creatures who need our care and concern. This story is about British criminals, but they exist everywhere, in Romania too.
If you’re thinking about getting a dog for someone you love as a Christmas present this year, please go to a rescue organisation and not a breeder; rescue charities have the cutest and most adorable dogs of all ages, puppies and older, who are desperate for loving homes…

Thea Thimble is a ten-year old Romanian girl, living high up in a Carpathian Mountain village, in Transylvania. Did you even know that Transylvania was real? It’s a proper place, a big region of Romania in Central Europe, and proper people live there, in villages and town and cities, going to school and living their lives like other Europeans.
The Thimble family (Granny Dido, dad Doru, elder son Robert, daughter Thea, younger son Tudor, and the two cats Farthing and Shilling) live ordinary lives until something small and black and hairy comes under the fence and turns the whole family upside down.
